Comprehensive USB Bug List

Listen, I know all you kids are totally on board with the whole internet radio craze. But there are a lot of us old people who don't assume that persistent internet is always guaranteed. Therefore, we have spent countless hours collecting and organizing a very fine selection of our favorite music into our own music librarys. We transport this with us, conveniently, on USB media, and play the songs via the media player in the car. Setting aside all the reasons for this, the Tesla media app needs some TLC, to put it nicely.

I fully realize that AP is at the forefront of attention on the software dev team. But now that 8.0 is in the wild (and AP is a lot better, great job there), a lot of us would really like Tesla to at least fix the bugs in the media player while knocking out some low hanging fruit.

Now, yes, while the number of us using USB storage as a primary audio source as a percentage isn't the majority, it is a growing segment as a quantity due to the ownership base simply increasing consistently.

I'd like others of like mind to make a few suggestions as to how we could at least get the media app back to neutrality (from current hostility) with regards to USB storage. And then from there, suggest some small improvements make it a real hit. I know that Tesla still had focus to do on the NAV with regards to waypoints. And while that is my second thing to see improved, this thread is about the first.

Suggestions:
Bring back letter shortcuts for song lists
Display proper and full track info when playing music from folder view
Read USB volume name instead of randomly assigning USB# label
Allow option to make USB album art primary art source (Google images is not a valid alternative to a failed gracenote lookup)
Playlist support
Queue next song, artist, album by making the text in now playing hot-linked
Automatic volume leveling
More granular equaliser control

That's it for now, thanks for everyone's help in making it better.

How about supporting standard MP3 tags for artists so all my multi artist albums don't get chopped up into different albums for each artist.

Also can we please have recents be able to go back to the track list that was being played before the car shut down or at least back to the album?

So what if anything can we do to get Tesla's attention on this matter? As you stated we are a small minority. While I bought the premium audio package because I wanted to get the best possible sound from my FLAC media, what was hard to do in 7.1 is almost impossible to do in 8.0.

I would gladly give up autopilot (which I don't use much) for a better and more useful USB playing experience.;)

I think it's a matter of getting attention here and then taking those results to them with with actual numbers to back them up. I think a focused list helps. Tesla does listen, but it seems like sometimes they don't have proper channels in place to get the importance of certain requests communicated properly.

Listen, it costs us nothing to very little for us to come up with 10 or so things that would make our USB listening experience better if not perfect. I really appreciate everyone who takes the time to contribute. Then maybe we can do a poll for certain features and see what comes of it.

I'll keep editing this post as we define the requests and add.

So far we have in no particular order:
1. Bring back letter shortcuts for song lists
2. Display proper and full track info when playing music from folder view
3. Read USB volume name instead of randomly assigning USB# label
4. Allow option to make USB album art primary art source (Google images is not a valid alternative to a failed gracenote lookup)
5. Playlist support / remember the "playlist" that the recent was a part of. If I'm understanding, if you Favorited/recent a song while listening to an album, it goes back into playing all the songs in that album (correct me if I'm wrong here)
6. Proper display for multi-artist albums (how would this best work?)
7. "Bookmark" exact place in audio track and resume playing from there after car shutdown/scheduled charge cycle
8. Queue next song, artist, album by making the text in now playing hot-linked
9. Automatic volume leveling (speed or ambient noise based?)
10. More granular equalizer control (10 band x 2 channel, F/R -OR- 5 band x 4 channel, FL/FR/RL/RR)

For volume leveling, I think there are two aspects - the speed/ambient noise that you mention, but also what is often referred to as ReplayGain - where the overall level of the song is measured and an adjustment factor stored as another (standard) tag. That way the player can adjust volume for each song, so they are at more or less the same level, without constantly having to adjust when a loud song comes on (often more recent recordings are boosted to be loud versus older, more dynamic recordings)

I tag all my music with ReplayGain and most computer or dedicated players support it

6. Proper display for multi-artist albums (how would this best work?)
iTunes treats these as "compilations" and there is a meta-data tag for that in the music tagging standard (see Metadatics)

That said, CarPlay would solve 99% of this, and bring other audio to our cars. Many people listen to podcasts which are not available at all in the Tesla. I personally listen to The Economist (a nice British voice reads the articles to me while I drive). Tesla will never support these, but if they adopted CarPlay (and presumably Android Auto), they would immediately be available.

I also have a huge list of FLAC songs with hundreds in each folder, so I guess I'm staying with 6.2

I have to ask anyone with version 8.0 -- DID THEY EVER IMPLEMENT GAPLESS PLAYBACK? This can be tested with an album like Pink Floyd's The Wall or the Beatles' Sergeant Pepper, where one track flows into the next one. Or with a radio play, where *all* the tracks flow smoothly from one into the next. The media player on the Tesla has always "skipped" at the break between tracks. Which it shouldn't. Has this been fixed yet?

If not, it shows that Tesla is totally unresponsive to bug reports, since I reported this bug back in 2013.

This is a very confusing thread. I can't tell if comments I see here are based on 8.0 media center or not. A lot of op's suggestions seem to be existing issues and others I'm not sure what they are since I have not received my OTA update yet. Could you guys make it more clear and include a little description since many of us are still on V7.

My understanding is that the suggestions are bugs and features still left unanswered even with v8. And in the case of two items, they were features present in v7, then removed in v8. My personal hope is to get these thing front and center for a patched v8 or a full inclusion for v8.1.

See, serveral people wanted to hold off to see if any of these would be fixed in v8. And it looks like the answer is 'no', plus it is worse.

Oh my god, they actually broke that in 8.0? That's an absolute requirement for me. 8.0 is a regression, I guess.
No, it wasn't broken because of 8.0... The USB phantom playing bug, not having a true Media Player OFF, and not having "PAUSE means stay that way until I tell it to play again" all existed in releases at least as far back as 6.2 that I started with.

BTW, OP, I'll get you my list of USB items once I have 8.0 installed. Other owners comments are interesting, but as much time as I spend, as as much as I care about quality Infotainment, I'd like to see it all for myself before providing input.

Thanks very much. I would really appreciate it if you could check on gapless playback. This is the bugfix I've been waiting for for three years. If it isn't fixed yet I'll be disgusted. If it is, I might actually upgrade.
